Making History, Breaking Records

Making History, Breaking Records

What more can you say about the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto that already hasn’t been said about landing on the moon, taking down the Berlin Wall, or inventing the light bulb. OK, maybe it’s a stretch to compare the beat down of Miguel Cotto to the fall of the Berlin Wall, but to Filipinos and boxing fans alike, Saturday night’s victory over the welterweight champion was utterly epic.

It was a fight that solidified Manny’s place in the upper echelon of boxing’s greats, from Jack Johnson to Sugar Ray Robinson to Muhammad Ali. It was a fight that placed Manny into America’s conscience and media mainstream. It was a fight that unified an entire island country, stopping all crime, and helped forget the recent tragedies that befell them in the past few months. It was a fight that topped all fights.

So why bother adding more cliches and unnecessary text into an indescribable event. Let’s look at video highlights from the fight along with photos:

I believe the song you are hearing in the first video is the Philippine National Anthem =) It is three different women singing, in harmony (I know this because I was at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the actual fight =)).

  3. Lorenz says:

That, Alyssa is “Lupang Hinirang”, the Philippine National Anthem.

Pacquaio-Mayweather, the boxing community will not allow this fight to be shelved. There’s a lot of money to be made for all those concerned, and the Pacquaio and Mayweather camps may bellyache here and there but I don’t think they would want to miss the opportunity. Pacquaio has been good for boxing and Mayweather better ride Pacman’s coattails and even thank Manny for the opportunity.

It was nice to see so many non-Filipinos root for Pacquaio last Saturday at a sportsbar on Second Avenue in Manhattan. We were packed like sardines, elbow to elbow with Cotto supporters, but cheers of ” Manny, Manny… ” predominated. Pacquaio has made boxing electrifying again.

  11. ASIAN CHICK says:

Cotto is a very sport guy! I like him..I am a filipina and I am impressed the way he handle his defeat. And if ever Pacquiao retired I think I will be one of Cotto supporter!….More power Cotto and more wins to come after this lose!
