Where will you be on Nov. 14th, when Manny Pacquiao attempts to make history with a defeat over Miguel Cotto?
TNF will be reporting from Las Vegas during the fight, but we’ll miss spending quality time with our families and friends as they react to every punch, slip, and accented word from the TV.
While I can’t predict what will happen from round to round, I’m almost positive the following will occur when my family gets together:
1. Lumpia wrappers will be peeled like it’s nobody’s business.
2. Someone will find something to criticize about the singer of the Philippines National Anthem. (Filipinos are so hard to please!)
3. Pacquiao’s smile while entering the ring will be contagious.
4. Mom will kindly remind us that “It’s ‘PAHckyoww,’ not ‘Packyoww.’ Americans don’t get the ‘ah’ sound!”
5. Uncle Boy will provide in-depth armchair analysis: “Mas maliit si Manny.”
6. “Heto na!” will immediately turn heads toward the TV screen.
7. “OOOOOHHHHHH!!!”
8. “[Something] [Something] Suntok!”
9. My aunt will belt out a random high-pitched scream.
10. Someone will recognize Pacquiao’s post-fight interview skills: “Mas mahusay ang kanyang Inglis!”
(Come to think of it, these moments and phrases might make help make a perfect drinking game!)
Check out some other fun fight reactions from around the world:
I love these parties. I love the great food, the proud screams, the jubilant celebration. The passion.
For many Filipinos, Pacquiao is bigger than this fight. He’s a hero for a country in need of one. I think Migi Soriano, a university student from the Philippines, described it best in an article from RingTV:
“It’s like the Philippines fighting a war against some foreign land (when Pacquiao fights). Everybody is united and seems to fight with Manny. Manny’s punch feels like every Filipino throwing a punch. Everytime Manny is cornered, Filipinos feel they are cornered. Every win brings a sense of hope, pride, and faith in our country. When Manny lost to (Erik) Morales, it felt like we had lost a great battle as a country.
“It would feel like losing a war, as I have said. That’s how big it is. He symbolizes all our strength as a country.”

Pacman will win. But he will be hurt at the end and it will be tough.

The National Anthem was sang as it should be. Walang makasariling nagpapa-impress sa mundo at the expense of the national anthem.
