How to Prepare for Saturday Night

How to Prepare for Saturday Night

I sometimes play around with my friends and tell them that the night of November 14 is the most important night of the year, a Filipino Heritage Night if you will, a night where anyone who has an ounce of Filipino blood in them stops and pays homage to the demigod better known as Manny Pacquiao.

But the more I joke about it and say it aloud to my friends, the more I believe it to be true.

When it comes down to it, this upcoming fight will not only define Manny as a boxer, but it will also define the lives of Filipinos worldwide, especially those downtrodden working away from home, living in poverty, and those simply carrying so much Filipino pride it hurts.

When Manny Pacquiao steps into that ring to battle it out with Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto, anyone who does have an ounce of Filipino blood in them should be proud. In fact, the night of November 14 should be the most important night of the year.

So let’s not be late to the party this weekend or come unprepared without knowing what’s at stake. Here is a list of things you may need to know before you watch the fight:

1. Before you dig into that plate of Chicken Adobo with Rice and a side of Lumpia, make sure you to memorize the Tale of the Tape. Sure, HBO will show it on the TV screen, but you’ll be too hyphy on San Miguel that you might miss some important stats. So here it is:

2. Acquaint yourself with Manny’s Top 10 Knockouts. If you don’t know how hard Manny hits, then you’re not going to be prepared when he takes Cotto down:

If you want to embed his Top 10 Knockouts to your site, go here for the embed code.

3. This should’ve been #1 but it’s absolute shameless plug so I moved it down to #3. As everyone knows, Filipinos and Manny fans alike love to look fresh on Saturday nights, especially fight nights. So impress your Titas and Titos with your exclusive Cuts & Glory T-shirt or maybe even a Nike LE one. Either way, don’t go to a fight night party without something Manny related! If anything, get it now so you can sport it on Monday morning so your co-workers will know who you represent:

4. Download Jay-Z’s ‘Blueprint 3′ and play out loud the ‘Thank You‘ track. He mentions Manny in it and apparently Hova is a big Manny fan. Then watch Manny on Jimmy Kimmel and check out his billboards in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Peep his Time magazine cover, ESPN magazine feature,  and all the celebrities who dropped predictions for his victory. After all that, you’ve officially basked under the enormous sunlight that is the pound-for-pound king and how he’s slowly taking over the American mainstream.

5. Make the following image as your profile photo for Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Friendster, or Match.com. It’s to show support for our main man. It was created by DG7. Maybe if you ask him nicely, he’ll give you a large-sized postermanny-pacquiao-obama-poster

5. Continuing on with more Manny Pacquiao-inspired fan work, check out The Trackrunners‘ “Pound for Pound” song. They came legit with it and dropped one of the best Manny songs out there. Lend your support by becoming their fan on Facebook!

6. Get to know Manny’s last five opponents. It’s good to know where our boy has been and who he’s beaten. Let’s hope we can add Miguel to that already illustrious list of losers:

7. Make sure to become a fan of the Official Manny Pacquiao Facebook page, follow his official Twitter, and follow The National Fist Twitter for up-to-the-minute news and exclusive content from Manny’s camp. Here are pictures from Manny’s latest Twitter update, from his hotel room at The Mandalay Bay:

8. Brush up on your Philippines National Anthem by singing along with these singers:

9. Brush up on your “Manny, Manny, Manny, Manny!” chants. It’s been a while since you screamed it, so it’s okay to practice it in your car or shower.

10. Is it November 14 yet?
